October Artist of the Month
Email interview
with Seth Kimbrough of Mortal Treason
September 29, 2005

After a tough break up after their first release, the band appeared to be making waves with their newly invented death metal overtone of hardcore music. Mortal Treason, just months after their second release on Flicker Records, has called it quits. You can read our review of the album here. Seth Kimbrough agreed to give us a final interview as we had made the decision to have them as artist of the month before we even knew the band had gone their separate ways. The band may not be around anymore but their music is!

Dennis: Mortal Treason's latest album, Sunrise over a Sea of Blood, is absolutely amazing. How do you feel the reaction had been since such a musical direction change from your first release?
Seth: The reaction has been very good. The kids that liked the first album like our new cd more and the kids that weren't into the first cd are really into this album.

Dennis: Well, sad times are upon us Mortal Treason fans. After the release of your first album the band seemed to have almost fallen apart with all but Seth and Josh left. Now after just the second release, which is amazing, the band is calling it quits. We actually posted Adam's comments from my space in our news section about the breakup. But I must say, on the outside it seemed so sudden since your latest album had just been released in July and you guys have been touring. Has this decision been in the works for awhile?
Seth: Letting this band go was about like losing an arm or a leg. It was that much a part of our lives. Since the beginning, it took every ounce of strength that we had to keep the band going. It seemed like no matter how hard we tried, things were constantly coming against us. After doing the band for six years, we just needed a break and a little time to find out what God wanted for each of us. As of right now we are all taking care of things that we needed to take care of in our own lives, and trying to pursue the calling that God has for each one of us. We might end up getting back together down the road, but we will just have to wait and see.

Dennis: Bands breaking up remind me of Paul and Barnibus. Sometimes things used in ministry don't always stay together or work out. I preached a sermon the other night that was entitled, "Sometimes Life Sucks." It was a very positive message I promise haha. So many people reading this interview deal with broken relationships personally with the divorce rate being almost 60%. Things in life just seem to go wrong...even for Christians. What would your words of encouragement be for fans reading this that may be upset with the breakup?
Seth: We all know that everything that lives eventually dies, and that beauty also fades away. Everything that we do in life eventually comes to an end. I believe that everything we do in life, good and bad, we have the choice to learn from our decisions. I know a lot of people are bummed about us breaking up, but we put out two cds and met a bunch of amazing people and just because the band isn't going anymore, I dont think that God is even close to being done with Mortal Treason.

Dennis: I know you have had a successful BMX career...will you be continuing with that...if so in what realm?
Seth: Right now, since I am currently not playing in any bands, I am definitely going to give all that I have and focus a lot more on riding. I know that God wants me to play music someday.

Dennis: The post mentioned that other members will be doing more music, is there any word on a new band or members trying to start something?
Seth: At the time there is not.

Dennis: What is great about music is that even though MT is no more, your music will last forever. What do you hope people 10 years from now will remember about MT and your two releases?
Seth: I hope that every time anybody listens to any of our songs, it will in some way benefit and strengthen their walk with Christ.

Dennis: How do you feel God is working in your life through this breakup?
Seth: He's definitely given me more faith.

Dennis: What will be your greatest memory of MT?
Seth: There are so many amazing memories, it is hard to just pick out one. But since I have to, I will say definitely going out inner tubing in Washington and looking back and seeing Josh ,our guitarist, bouncing off of rocks with the biggest smile on his face, and yet fear in his eyes. I will never forget that.
