The
White Stripes
Icky Thump

Detroit minimalist rock duo (specifically,
southwest Detroit minimalist rock duo) the White Stripes -- Jack White,
guitar and vocals, Meg White, drums -- formed in 1997 (Bastille Day, to be
precise) with the idea of making simple rock & roll music. From the
red-and-white peppermint candy motif of their debut singles, self-titled
album, and stage show to their on-the-surface rudimentary style, they
succeeded wildly and immediately with that mission.
As soon as the title track begins you realize quickly this is not like their
last album. This is pure and total garage rock with an insane mix of
influence and instrumentation. Jack shows of his amazing talent on the
guitar and lets the shredding begin. Many fans, new and old, are already
quick to call it a masterpiece and classic. I don't know that I would
go as far to say that so quickly, but I will tell you this, wow. The classic
garage feel is incredible and the very next track, "You Don't Know What Love
Is," and many others, give you a throwback feel which gives them an absolute
pure and unique style in today's market. "Conquest" brings out the
eccentric styling of The White Stripes with an odd but cool track. There is
a great celtic presence on a few of the tracks which give the album a folk
feel. The overall mix of the tracks in incredible. It seems to
be a perfect album for these two. Is it weird that one of my favorite tracks
is called "Little Cream Soda." The complexity of this song is the perfect
example of The White Stripes. This album may someday become a classic,
but at least for now I will enjoy it often.
Jack Whites vocals to me are unique but for some reason send me to thinking
of Jimmy Page. Am I just hearing things? I love the vocals and adds to
the overall quality of this group. The lyrics deal with an incredibly
wide variety of topics. Many seems like social commentaries, others
are stories of love while others hold onto a spiritual path. I listed there
are 4 offensive words, 1 d*** and 3 are the word hell. Many may not find
that as offensive but did need to list it.
